North American Odyssey
After five successful international programs, A Fresh Chapter brought an innovative support model home to the United States. From April 24 – May 1, 2016, we launched our first North American program – the LA to Phoenix Elemental Odyssey. To learn more about this successful and inspiring addition to the AFC Line Up, check out this post: Elemental Odyssey – Through The Eyes Of Our Tribe.
Incorporating community-based volunteering, meaningful travel, and support activities in Los Angeles and Phoenix, this weeklong volunteer travel experience was embedded into our broader framework of online tools, resources, and support designed to help people impacted by cancer reframe adversity, redefine the path forward, and reconnect to themselves, their families, and their communities. A Fresh Chapter programs are open to men and women from across North America who have experienced any type of cancer – either as a patient or a caregiver.
If you want to start fresh with us in 2017, make sure you’re signed up here: Join the AFC Odyssey Tribe. Then, stay tuned for announcements about our upcoming programs including a brand new Leadership Odyssey designed specifically for patient advocates and leaders across the oncology community.
Volunteer with inspiring projects in Los Angeles, explore your story through a new lens, watch the sun rise over the vast beauty of the Grand Canyon, and give back with members of the local community in Phoenix.
Los Angeles: You’ll join a movement of fresh food and empowerment, make a positive impact on underserved families, and learn from a leading expert on how to find grace and resilience while dealing with cancer. You’ll have the opportunity to unplug from your day to day life and reconnect to yourself while meeting other people who can relate to what you’ve been through.
Sunrise At The Grand Canyon: After our time in Los Angeles, you’ll join us for an epic trip to the red rocks of Arizona. After an overnight stay in Flagstaff, you’ll rise before dawn for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to watch the sun rise over the beautiful expanse of the Grand Canyon.
Phoenix: After our unforgettable morning together, you’ll travel south to the City of The Sun. While in Phoenix, you will give back to underserved families and children impacted by cancer and remember that there is need everywhere in the world. You’ll learn about Native American culture, meet people who have overcome incredible odds, and share your story via an innovative video project.
L.A. Kitchen believes that neither food nor people should ever go to waste. By reclaiming healthy, local food that would otherwise be discarded, training men and women who are unemployed for jobs, and providing healthy meals to fellow citizens, L.A. Kitchen empowers, nourishes, and engages the community. L.A. Kitchen volunteers represent a wide cross section of our community, and specialize in providing intergenerational volunteers opportunities that help transform raw fruits and vegetables into nutritious meals and snacks. Volunteers work side-by- side with job trainee students and graduates, challenging traditional barriers that divide communities.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul strives to Feed, Clothe, House, and Heal deeply and meaningfully. One visit at a time. The visit, as a symbol, an emblem, a blueprint for effective action, is central to who they are as an organization. The visit, in the home, across the Valley, and a thousand times a day in each of our dining rooms, ministries, and operation centers. The visit is what gives each program its pride of purpose, to fight for their constituency with depth, intensity, empathy, and the patience lasting solutions require.

Eli Lilly and Company, an organization that provides hope and healing to people facing cancer through their medicines and insights, shares our belief in connecting hearts at home and abroad and is the perfect partner to share A Fresh Chapter’s expansion. Lilly wants to better understand the cancer journey, including the healing process, and believes, “Cancer doesn’t just affect the body. Complete care needs to reach the person inside.”
